Local conservation law of rubber elasticity in hydrogel networks undergoing microphase separation and toughening

چکیده
Thermoresponsive polymer segments have been reported to induce lateral microphase separations due their switching transitions from a hydrophilic state hydrophobic one in hydrogels, which result shrinkage and collapse of the networks significantly improved mechanical strength. However, route are assembled into micelles during separations, thermoresponsive toughening mechanisms not fully understood. In this study, local conservation law rubber elasticity is firstly formulated describe micellization undergo separation. Flory-Huggins theory, interfacial free-energy equation extended Maxwell model then employed thermodynamics hydrogel, composed both segments. The mechanism further explored discussed based on proposed models. Finally, models verified using experimental results literature. This study provides new for hydrogels also critical insights physical principles govern molecular self-assembly.

Nonaffine rubber elasticity for stiff polymer networks.
We present a theory for the elasticity of cross-linked stiff polymer networks. Stiff polymers, unlike their flexible counterparts, are highly anisotropic elastic objects. Similar to mechanical beams, stiff polymers easily deform in bending, while they are much stiffer with respect to tensile forces ("stretching"). Unlike in previous approaches, where network elasticity is derived from the stret...
متن کاملMicrophase separation in nonequilibrium biomembranes.
Compositional heterogeneities of cell membranes are thought to play an important role in many physiological processes. We study how variations in the membrane composition can be driven by nonthermal fluctuating forces and therefore show how these can occur relatively far from any critical point for the membrane. We show that the membrane steady state is not only controlled by the strength of th...
متن کاملPhase and microphase separation in polymer blends
When two different polymers are mixed, they usually demix because of the slight repulsive interaction that exists between their monomers. This is general and may be related to phase separation in two component mixtures. When the same polymer blend is cross-linked in the one phase region, elastic forces develop and do not let this to occur. There results a microphase separation, with coexistence...
متن کاملThermal fluctuations and rubber elasticity.
The effects of thermal elastic fluctuations in rubbery materials are examined. It is shown that, due to their interplay with the incompressibility constraint, these fluctuations qualitatively modify the large-deformation stress-strain relation, compared to that of classical rubber elasticity. To leading order, this mechanism provides a simple and generic explanation for the peak structure of Mo...
متن کاملMicrophase separation in binary polymeric micelles
2014 A theoretical analysis of microphase separation in binary micelles is presented. We consider micelles consisting of two kinds of diblock copolymers such that the micellar corona contains two chemically distinct block types (A and B). Both intramicellar and intermicellar processes may occur. We focus on intermicellar segregation occurring after a quench yielding complete intramicellar micro...
